Cave description

The exploration in Hârtopul Bonchii begins with a vertical descent and stretches for no less than 6,686 meters in length. In the depths you will discover a world frozen in time, as it was maybe a few million years ago. You can see fossil snails and shells. Here you can also see the traces that, in their passage, these primitive beings drew on the stone from the cave walls, true lacework of nature.

Hârtopul Bonchii Cave is located in Defileul Crișului Repede – Pădurea Craiului Natura 2000 Site, near Roșia, Bihor County. The cave is part of a karst complex that includes Gruieţ Cave – Hârtopul Bonchii Cave.

“My favorite! It’s six kilometers long, which is quite a lot. However, a minimum of initiation is required to go through it. It has narrow passages and very large halls. The alternation of these underground spaces creates images that are hard to forget. In addition, there are many fossils: snails, shells … Printed in stone, they give life to very beautiful designs.” (Tudor Rus, “Speodava Speleology Club”, Ştei)
