A jewel of religious folk art, the old church in Josani dates from 1768. Because it had been built on a hill on the outskirts of the village, where access was quite difficult, in 1798 it was proposed to move the church in the middle of the village. In the request addressed to the bishop of that time, Ignatie Darabanț, it was specified that the church is solid enough to be moved “without demolition”. Now located next to the new wall church, the place is distinguished by the elegance of the consoles and decorative elements, such as the rope, which surrounds the church.

Cenotaphs, crosses symbolically erected on the outer wall of the church, in memory of the locals who ended up in unknown places, far from home, also tell very interesting stories.

Josani can be reached on E 60 (DN1) through Vadu Crișului or Aleșd, then on DJ 1081.

The wooden church from Josani is located on the T3 cycle tourist route, “Pădurea Craiului all-inclusive“.
